It's the classic dilemma. You're on the checkout page for your flight or accommodation, rubbing your hands at the spectacular price you just landed. Suddenly, that sneaky little box pops up asking: "Would you like to add Travel Insurance for just €35?".
The Portuguese mindset kicks in instantly: "That won't happen to me. €35 already pays for some good beers at the destination!". You click "No thanks, I like to live on the edge" and finish the purchase.
But is saving a few quid on insurance a master move or the worst financial decision of your life? Martin is going to break this myth once and for all, because "that won't happen to me" only works until the day it actually does.
1. The European Health Insurance Card (No Miracles Here) 🇪🇺
"Ah, but I have the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), I'm covered!". Hold on there, young explorer.
The EHIC is great if you're going on holiday to Spain or Germany and need to go to the public hospital ER. It gives you access to healthcare on the same terms as residents of that country.
But there's a giant problem: in many countries, public hospitals have endless waiting lists and you'll want to go private. The EHIC doesn't cover private clinics, doesn't cover rescue operations (if you break a leg skiing in the Alps and need a helicopter, that bill is on you), and doesn't pay for the repatriation flight back to Portugal if you have to come back on a stretcher.
2. Outside Europe? A Sneeze Costs a Fortune 💸
If you're going outside Europe (USA, Asia, South America), travelling without insurance is playing Russian roulette with your savings.
In the United States, a simple appendicitis or a broken leg can cost between $30,000 and $50,000. Yes, you read that right. That's the price of a studio apartment in the suburbs (or close). In Thailand, the classic "traveller's diarrhoea" or a moped accident (because you thought you were Valentino Rossi in flip-flops) can wipe out a whole year's budget.
Travel insurance isn't a luxury, it's the guarantee you won't have to set up a GoFundMe to pay the hospital bill.
3. Your Suitcase Went on Holiday Somewhere Else 🧳

Travel insurance isn't only for when you get sick. It's for those monumental headaches airlines love to provide.
Imagine landing in Bali, with 35 degrees in the shade. You go to the baggage carousel and your suitcase doesn't show up. It got rerouted to Frankfurt by mistake. You're dressed in the fleece sweater you wore on the flight and you have no underwear.
A good travel insurance policy gives you an emergency allowance (e.g. €200 to €300) to immediately go buy clothes, toiletries and a swimsuit so you don't lose the first beach days while the airline tries to figure out where it stuffed your luggage.
4. "Ah, I'm Just Going for a Quick Dip…" (The Sports Trap) 🏄♂️
Going surfing in Morocco? Snorkeling in the Maldives? Riding quad bikes in the desert?
Watch out for the small print! Most "basic" travel insurance plans, or the ones bundled with credit cards, exclude "extreme or risk sports". If you tear your knee on a surfboard and the insurer finds out, they'll wash their hands of it. Always make sure you buy the extra sports cover if you're going to do anything beyond lying on the towel sipping coconut water.
Insurance Protects You. Who Protects Your Car? 🚗

Bottom line: travelling without insurance is a terrible idea. The €30 or €50 you pay before going buys you the most valuable thing in the world: peace of mind.
You protect your health and your suitcase abroad. But who's protecting your car back in Portugal while you're off exploring the world? Your car doesn't need travel insurance, it needs safe Valet Parking.
Don't leave it abandoned on the street, gathering dust, exposed to parking dings, fines or being the new toilet for the neighbourhood pigeons. Your peace of mind has to be complete.
Take the car, drive to the airport and leave the key with us. Multipark keeps your vehicle in a fenced lot, monitored 24/7 and away from trouble. And when you land (hopefully without having needed to use your health insurance!), your car is at the Arrivals door, clean and ready to take you home.
Travel safe and park smart. Get a quote and book your Valet Parking on the Multipark website before you board!
