Introduction
Crete is the largest island in Greece and a world unto itself. With a history that goes back to the Minoan civilisation, paradise beaches and finger-licking food, it’s a destination that pleases everyone. This 3-day itinerary was put together to give you a taste of the best Crete has to offer, no rushing and with focus on what really matters.
Day 1: The Magic of Chania and the Western Beaches
The first day is dedicated to exploring the west coast, famous for its white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. Our base will be the charming town of Chania.
Morning:
Start the day with a visit to the famous Balos Lagoon. You can get there by boat from Kissamos or by car, followed by a short walk. The setting is breathtaking, with its white sand and turquoise tones. If you have time, take a detour to the island of Gramvousa, with its Venetian fortress and panoramic views.
Afternoon:
After a beach morning, explore the ruins of Ancient Aptera, a city-state with a rich history and stunning views over Souda Bay. For lunch, look for a traditional taverna in the village of Megala Chorafia and treat yourself to Cretan cuisine.
Evening:
In the late afternoon, lose yourself in the alleys of Chania’s historic centre. The old Venetian harbour, with its lighthouse and colourful buildings, is the perfect place for a sunset stroll. Have dinner at one of the many tavernas in the area and try the local specialities.

Day 2: History, Culture and Mountain Villages
On the second day, we head into the island’s interior to discover Crete’s rich history and culture.
Morning:
Visit the Arkadi Monastery, a symbol of Cretan resistance against Ottoman rule. Its Venetian architecture and fascinating history make it a must-see. Carry on to Margarites, a village known for its pottery tradition, which dates back to Minoan times.
Afternoon:
Explore the ancient city of Eleutherna, an important archaeological site that reveals Crete’s history from the Minoan era to the Byzantine period. Visit the local museum to see the artefacts found in the area. Then unwind in the village of Axos, with its views over Mount Psiloritis.
Evening:
For dinner, head up to the mountain village of Anogeia, known for its strong cultural identity and hospitality. Try the famous antikristo (slow-cooked lamb) and, if you’re lucky, catch a traditional Cretan music performance.
Day 3: Heraklion and the Minoan Legacy
The last day is dedicated to Heraklion, Crete’s capital, and to its impressive Minoan legacy.
Morning:
Visit the Palace of Knossos, the centre of Minoan civilisation and home to the mythical Minotaur. Explore the reconstructed ruins, the colourful frescoes and the iconic red columns. Then visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which houses one of the world’s finest collections of Minoan artefacts, including the famous Phaistos Disc.
Afternoon:
Escape the city and visit the picturesque village of Archanes, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. It’s the perfect place to try the local wines. If you have time, stop by Agios Myronas, a small village on a hillside with stunning views.
Evening:
Say goodbye to Crete with one last dinner in Heraklion. Explore the city centre and pick one of the many tavernas for a memorable meal.
