Introduction
Iceland’s South Coast is one of those places that feels straight out of a film. With a landscape that changes every kilometre, this region offers an incredible concentration of natural wonders. We’ve put together a 3-day itinerary so you can make the most of this adventure, with no rush and a focus on the essentials. Grab your jacket and let’s go!
Day 1: From Reykjavík to Vík
The first day is a real feast for the eyes. Leaving Reykjavík, the famous Ring Road takes us to some of Iceland’s most iconic postcards. The day will be filled with breathtaking waterfalls and uniquely beautiful beaches.
The first must-stops are the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where the big draw is the path that lets you walk behind the curtain of water, and its hidden neighbour, Gljúfrabúi. Shortly after, we come to the imposing Skógafoss, a powerful waterfall that often treats us to rainbows. If you have the energy, climb the staircase next to it for a panoramic view.
Continuing south, the detour to Dyrhólaey reveals a giant rock arch and a spectacular view over the coast. In summer, it’s a great spot to watch puffins. The day ends at the famous black-sand beach of Reynisfjara, with its basalt columns and imposing rock formations in the sea. Be careful with the waves, which can be treacherous.
You’ll spend the night in the picturesque village of Vík.

Day 2: From Vík to Jökulsárlón
On day two, the landscape becomes even more dramatic, with moss-covered lava fields giving way to glacier tongues. The first stop is the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, a place that feels like it belongs in a fairy tale.
The highlight of the day, and perhaps of the trip, is reaching Skaftafell National Park, part of the vast Vatnajökull glacier. Here, hiking options are plentiful, including one that leads to the Svartifoss waterfall, known for its black basalt columns. The real star of the region, however, is the glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón. Watching icebergs drift slowly toward the sea is a hypnotic experience. Across the road, you’ll find Diamond Beach, where chunks of ice glitter on the black sand like diamonds.
The night will be spent near Höfn, a small fishing town known for its lobster.
Day 3: Return to Reykjavík
The third day is dedicated to the return, but not before taking the chance to revisit a spot that stuck with you or to explore something new. The drive back along the Ring Road offers a fresh perspective on the stunning landscapes you’ve already crossed.
An interesting stop on the way back can be the village of Hveragerði, known for its geothermal activity and its greenhouses heated by the earth’s warmth. It’s a good spot to stretch your legs and grab a coffee before reaching Reykjavík.

What you should know before you go
- Driving: The Ring Road (Route 1) is the main road and is well maintained. However, the weather can change quickly, so always check road conditions and the forecast.
- Accommodation: The South Coast is very popular. Book accommodation in advance, especially if travelling in summer.
- Clothing: Pack waterproof clothing and dress in layers. Iceland’s weather is unpredictable, even in summer.
