Day 1: The charm of Monsaraz and the tradition of pottery
The first day is dedicated to exploring Alqueva's crown jewel, the medieval town of Monsaraz, and the traditions that surround it.
Start the day in Reguengos de Monsaraz, a town that, although not on the shores of the lake, is a nerve centre of the region. Then head to São Pedro do Corval, the largest pottery centre in Portugal. Here, you can visit the workshops, watch the artisans at work and perhaps take home a unique piece as a memento.
In the afternoon, head up to Monsaraz. Walk the schist streets, visit the castle and let yourself be dazzled by the panoramic views over the vast lake. On day two, we continue exploring the shores of the great lake, with stops in Mourão and the emblematic Aldeia da Luz.
Visit the village of Mourão, with its castle dominating the landscape. Then, relax at the Mourão River Beach, another of the excellent bathing areas Alqueva offers. The next stop is at Aldeia da Luz, the village submerged by the dam waters and rebuilt elsewhere. The local museum tells the story of this change and preserves the memory of the old village.
End the day next to the imposing Alqueva Dam, the structure that gave rise to all of this. The scale of the dam and the lake stretching out in front of it is truly impressive.
Day 3: Nautical adventure and Alentejo flavours
The last day is dedicated to activities more linked to the water and to discovering other treasures of the region.
How about waking up on board a houseboat? At the Amieira Marina, you can rent one of these boats and have a unique experience, sailing freely across the lake. If you prefer dry land, you can do one of the signposted hiking trails, like the one from Amieira to Alqueva.
Visit the village of Portel and its castle, and for a wine and food experience, a visit to Herdade do Esporão is almost a must. You can take a guided tour of the vineyards and winery, with a wine tasting. It's the perfect way to say goodbye to the flavours and landscapes of Alqueva.
