Look, the heat has finally arrived. You get into the car after it's been parked in the sun, you're melting, and the first thing you do is crank the air conditioning up to the max. You shut the windows, brace yourself for that lovely cool air and, suddenly... wham.
The air coming out of the vents smells like dirty socks after an intense gym session. The classic "AC stink".
Don't worry, you don't have a dead badger hidden in the engine. That smell is just moisture, fungus and bacteria that built up in the vents over the winter. But breathing that in is bad for your health and ruins any road trip.
Martin will explain how to fix this drama in a simple way, before you head off on holiday:
1. The "Hand Grenade" Sanitizer Trick 💣
You don't need to rush off to a workshop and drop dozens of euros on this. Go to an auto parts store or a hypermarket and buy an "Air Conditioning Sanitizer Spray" (people often call it the "grenade").
It costs around €10 and is super easy to use: turn the car on, set the AC to max cold, switch on air recirculation, trigger the spray on the floor of the passenger side, get out of the car and shut the doors. In 15 minutes, the spray cleans all the ducts and kills the bacteria. Goodbye, sock stink!

2. The Cabin Filter (Your Car's Mask) 😷
Doing the spray trick and not changing the cabin filter (or pollen filter) is like taking a shower and putting back on yesterday's dirty clothes.
This filter is usually hidden behind the glove box and its job is to stop dust, pollen and pollution from getting into the car. It costs between €10 and €20 and you can change it yourself. Go to YouTube, search "Change cabin filter + [your car's model]" and you'll have it done in 5 minutes.
3. The Golden Habit (To Never Smell Bad Again) 🌬️
Do you know why fungus grows there? Because you switch off the car with the AC on and the tubes stay full of cold condensation in the dark. It's the perfect party for bacteria.
The masters' golden rule: about 2 or 3 minutes before reaching your destination, turn off the AC button (the cold light), but leave the ventilation running. The natural air will dry out all the tubes before you switch off the engine. Zero moisture = zero fungus.
