This temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is carved into the rock and houses hundreds of Buddha statues and murals over 2,000 years old. Day 2: Travel Back in Time in Polonnaruwa
On day two, we travel to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's second capital. This ancient city, also a UNESCO Heritage Site, is a vast complex of incredibly well-preserved ruins. The best way to explore the area is by bicycle, which lets you wander at your own pace among temples, stupas and Buddha statues carved in the rock. Gal Vihara, with its four magnificent Buddha statues in different postures, is one of the highlights. Unlike other busier sites, Polonnaruwa has the atmosphere of a city lost in the jungle, where it's easy to feel like a real explorer.
Day 3: Anuradhapura or Nature in Minneriya
For the third day, we have two suggestions, depending on your interests. If your passion is history and archaeology, a visit to Anuradhapura is a must. It was Sri Lanka's first capital and is a sacred city, with a very particular atmosphere. Here you'll find the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, temples still in use and gigantic stupas. If you prefer an experience more linked to nature, an excellent option is a safari at Minneriya National Park (or one of the neighbouring parks, depending on the time of year). This area is famous for having one of the highest concentrations of Asian elephants in the world. Seeing them in the wild, in large herds, is an unforgettable experience and a fantastic way to end your trip through the Cultural Triangle.
