Introduction
The Picos de Europa are one of those places that leave you speechless. Imposing mountains, lush green valleys, lakes of crystal-clear water and villages that look like they've stepped out of a fairy tale. If you've got 3 days to explore this natural paradise in northern Spain, this itinerary is for you. Get ready for an unforgettable trip, with no rushing and plenty to discover.
Day 1: Cangas de Onís, Covadonga and the Lakes
Our starting point is Cangas de Onís, the former capital of Asturias. Stroll across its famous "Roman" bridge and take the chance to taste the local cheeses and ciders at the market. From here, we head to the Sanctuary of Covadonga, a place of great historical and spiritual significance, with an impressive basilica carved into the mountain.
The afternoon is dedicated to one of the highlights of the trip: the Lakes of Covadonga. The road to get there is winding, but the reward is huge. The Enol and Ercina lakes, of glacial origin, form a breathtaking setting. Take a leisurely walk around the lakes and enjoy a picnic with the treats you bought in Cangas de Onís.
Day 2: The Ruta del Cares
Today is dedicated to one of Spain's most spectacular hikes: the Ruta del Cares. This route, carved into the rock along the gorge of the Cares river, offers vertiginous views and landscapes that stay in your memory. The most popular trail links Poncebos to Caín, and although it isn't excessively difficult, it requires some care and proper footwear. The experience of walking through tunnels and across suspension bridges over the abyss is truly unique.
If you're not a fan of long hikes, you can choose to do just the initial part of the route from Poncebos, or explore the charming village of Bulnes, accessible by funicular.
Day 3: Potes and Fuente Dé
On our last day, we head to Cantabria to visit Potes, one of the most beautiful towns in the region. With its medieval bridges, stone towers and flower-filled balconies, Potes invites you to a leisurely walk through its narrow streets. Take the chance to try the "cocido lebaniego", a traditional dish of the region.
From Potes, we head to Fuente Dé, where a cable car takes us to over 1,800 metres of altitude in just a few minutes. The view from the top is absolutely overwhelming, with the peaks rising up all around. There are several hiking trails starting from the top of the cable car, for all levels of difficulty.
What you should know before you go

- Access to the Lakes: During high season, car access to the Lakes of Covadonga may be restricted. Check the buses that run the route.
